There are three realistic ways for a tourist to stay connected in Egypt: buy a local or tourist SIM on arrival, install a travel eSIM before you fly, or keep using your UK network’s roaming. A local SIM can be cheaper and comes with an Egyptian number; a travel eSIM is ready the moment you land; roaming can be the simplest of all. None of them is universally best.

Your phone doesn’t support eSIM
Take the physical SIM route.
That means a local SIM in Egypt, or an international physical travel SIM bought before you fly. A travel eSIM isn’t an option.

Where to buy a tourist SIM in Egypt
Only what the operators’ own pages confirm — one operator’s process isn’t every operator’s process.
- Vodafone officially states its Tourist Line is available at Vodafone airport stores and Vodafone retail stores across Egypt. The page doesn’t name specific airports.
- WE publishes its tourist plans online but doesn’t state the purchase channel on that page.
- e& publishes its Traveler bundles online but doesn’t state the purchase channel on that page.
- Orange says a new eSIM line is activated at an Orange shop. Its page separately describes app-based conversion and swap flows for existing lines. The same FAQ contains conflicting tourist/foreigner eligibility wording, so confirm eligibility with Orange before relying on a local eSIM.
- For a new mobile SIM, NTRA’s current foreign-customer rules require an original valid passport and a valid residency document at an operator branch. Tourist products may have operator-specific flows, so confirm the documents accepted before you travel.
Before you fly
Can you buy a SIM card for Egypt from the UK?
Yes for some options, no for others — the differences matter.
Travel eSIM — yes
Buy online before departure and install it at home. NileRoam’s Egypt eSIM plans work this way — one of several travel eSIM choices on the market.
Egyptian local SIM — buy it in Egypt
Egyptian tourist lines are sold in Egypt. Being able to buy a travel eSIM online doesn’t mean local Egyptian SIMs can be bought the same way.
Local eSIM — in Egypt, with ID
Orange’s page says new eSIM lines are activated at an Orange shop, while its app-based instructions cover existing-line conversion or swap. Its current FAQ is internally inconsistent about tourist/foreigner eligibility, so verify before relying on this route.
Physical travel SIM — sometimes
Some international sellers post physical travel SIMs to the UK. Useful if your phone lacks eSIM support; compare the data terms before buying.
UK roaming — nothing to buy
Your UK SIM simply roams in Egypt. The simplest start, but the cost depends on your network and tariff — check before you rely on it.
Three different products
Local SIM, local eSIM and travel eSIM are not the same thing
“eSIM” is a form factor — a digital SIM instead of a plastic card. It says nothing about eligibility, identity checks, phone numbers, where you buy it or what it costs.
Egyptian local SIM
A physical prepaid SIM or tourist line from WE, e&, Vodafone or Orange, bought and registered in Egypt. It is an Egyptian operator line; included calls depend on the specific product. Current NTRA rules for foreign customers require a valid passport and residency document for a new SIM.
Egyptian local eSIM
The same idea as a local SIM, just without the plastic card: an Egyptian operator line issued as an eSIM. Orange’s current FAQ is internally inconsistent: one answer says eligibility includes tourists, while another says foreigners need valid residence. Its page says new eSIM lines are activated at a shop. A new-line fee is separate from any tourist bundle price.
International travel eSIM
A data product bought online from a travel eSIM retailer (including us), installed before you fly. No Egyptian number, no local registration — data only, with the price and plan rules shown before you pay.
So “can tourists get an eSIM in Egypt?” needs a careful answer. A travel eSIM can be bought before the trip. For an Egyptian operator eSIM, eligibility and identity rules are operator-specific; Orange’s current FAQ is internally inconsistent, so confirm directly before relying on it. These are different products with different processes, numbers and pricing.

What a travel eSIM includes
NileRoam’s current Egypt plans are data-only: no Egyptian phone number, no traditional calls, no SMS. That’s normal for travel eSIMs — they carry your internet, not a local line.
What a local tourist SIM includes
A tourist line is an Egyptian line: it comes with an Egyptian phone number and local minutes (the WE, e& and Vodafone tourist plans all include them, plus international minutes).
WhatsApp keeps your number — that’s not an Egyptian number
Using any data SIM or eSIM, WhatsApp keeps running on your existing UK number. Keeping your WhatsApp identity is not the same as having an Egyptian phone number.
Keeping your UK SIM in for calls and texts? Those are charged by your UK network’s own roaming terms — turn off data roaming on it and let the eSIM or tourist SIM carry your data.
Data & “unlimited”
How much data do you get — and what does “unlimited” mean?
For an Egypt data SIM, the honest answer is always an allowance plus a rule for what happens when it runs out.
What local tourist plans publish
- Fixed allowances: WE’s tourist plans are 5GB and 20GB; e&’s Traveler bundles run from 7GB to 40GB
- WE states that after your bundle is used up, internet continues at a throttled speed for free
- e&’s bundles are fixed data — the larger two can be renewed up to three times
How to read “unlimited”
- A daily high-speed allowance followed by throttling is not unlimited high-speed data — it’s an allowance plus a slower speed
- Travel eSIMs sold as “unlimited” may use daily high-speed allowances, throttling or other fair-use rules — check the exact allowance and speed terms for the product you buy
- Fixed-allowance plans (like ours) are simpler: a set amount of high-speed data, then the plan ends
Whatever you buy — local or travel — read the allowance and the after-allowance rule together. That’s the only honest definition of “unlimited”.

Vodafone officially confirms its Tourist Line is available at Vodafone airport stores. The other operators’ official pages don’t state airport availability, so we won’t claim it for them — their retail stores across Egypt are the confirmed alternative where stated.
Can I get a SIM card for Egypt from the UK?
A travel eSIM, yes — buy it online before you fly (our Egypt eSIM plans work this way). An Egyptian local SIM is generally bought in Egypt after you arrive. Some sellers ship international physical travel SIMs to the UK, and your UK SIM will simply roam if you leave it in.
Do I need a passport to buy a SIM card in Egypt?
For a new Egyptian mobile SIM, current NTRA rules for foreign customers require the original valid passport and a valid residency document at an operator branch. Operator-specific tourist products may have their own sales flow, so confirm what residency document the operator will accept before relying on a local SIM.
Can tourists get an eSIM from an Egyptian operator?
