Some shops sell Egypt eSIMs as “unlimited”. In practice they work like our daily plan: a set amount at high speed each day, then a slower speed until the next day. We’d rather show you the exact numbers — 1GB per day, then 1Mbps — so nothing is a surprise.

The honest bit about speed
5G and actual speeds depend on your device, your location — city streets, the Nile valley, the Red Sea coast — and network conditions at the time. No honest retailer can promise a speed in a specific place. We won’t either.

Will it work with your phone?

Dial *#06# and look for an EID — that’s the quick way to check.
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked
Phones locked to one network — common with contract phones — can’t use a travel eSIM.

What happens to your UK number
Does the eSIM come with a phone number?
No. Every plan is data-only: no Egyptian number, no traditional calls, no SMS. It’s purely for internet.
Can you keep using your UK number?
Yes. eSIM phones are dual-SIM: keep your UK SIM active alongside the eSIM. Calls and texts to your UK number arrive as normal, charged by your UK network’s own terms. To avoid roaming charges on your UK SIM, turn off its data roaming and let the eSIM carry your data.
Does WhatsApp still work?
Exactly as before. WhatsApp keeps running on your existing UK number — it simply uses the eSIM’s data connection instead of Wi-Fi.

When should I install my eSIM?
Before you fly, at home on Wi-Fi — it takes a few minutes. Your plan only starts when your phone first connects to a supported network in Egypt, so installing early costs you nothing.
Can I use hotspot or tethering?
Yes — hotspot is supported on all plans, as long as your device allows it.
Will it work in Cairo, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh?
Your plan connects to Orange, Etisalat and Vodafone across Egypt, including the main tourist areas. Signal at any specific spot depends on your location, device and network conditions.
Do I need an unlocked phone?
Yes — locked phones can’t use travel eSIMs. See Will it work with your phone? for how to check.
Can I use my UK SIM at the same time?
Yes. On a dual-SIM phone, keep your UK SIM in for calls and texts — just turn off data roaming on it and let the eSIM carry your data. More in Your number, calls & WhatsApp.
Is a local SIM card cheaper in Egypt?
Sometimes — especially for long stays — and it comes with an Egyptian number. The trade-off is queueing and passport registration after your flight. The comparison above (“eSIM, UK roaming or a local SIM?”) walks through when each option wins.
Where does my internet traffic exit?
NileRoam’s current Egypt plans use a UK internet breakout. Your phone connects to supported mobile networks in Egypt, while your mobile data reaches the public internet through the UK. This isn’t a VPN, and websites or apps may use other signals to determine your location.
Any technical details I might need?
Settings are usually automatic. If your phone asks for an access point name (APN), it’s plus. See Where does my internet traffic exit? for how your data reaches the internet.
